Beet the heat

It's not news that we have just endured the hottest few weeks of summer on record, it even hit highs over 40 degrees in Orange more than once, which is unheard of, a couple of days over 30 is what we're used to. It is a huge relief to be back to our mid-late 20's again. Ahhh Orange summer.


The heat is a pretty overworked topic at the moment, but we have a new little project on the go, which is very sensitive to the weather; our kitchen garden & the wine garden, both recently planted and not very established, so the weather was a big concern for us. The wine garden didn't fare too well, we lost a lot of soft leaved flowering plants and a lot was stunted, but with some TLC I think it will come back pretty well, I have learnt that I should plant some more hardy perennials rather than the spectacular annuals, so I will have continued growth all year round with plants that bloom in wedding season AND that can withstand a bit of heat and mild frost (they are protected more for frost). Gardens are a constant work & total trial and error for me. 


What did do well was the kitchen garden, with produce appearing so quickly (might have something to do with the fact that Mark, our gardener, actually knows what to do). We have harvested some sensational radishes & daikon that taste amazing! Fresh, hot & crunchy & then last week we harvested 3 different types of beetroot (pictured). Needless to say these beautiful jewels will be gracing our plates this week.
